The Racing Mind Right When You Need to Focus

Anxiety has terrible timing. Understanding why can make it slightly less disorienting.

Anxiety tends to show up loudest in exactly the moments you most need a clear head — before an exam, during a presentation, right as you sit down to finally get work done. That's not a coincidence; it's how threat-response systems work, activating hardest under perceived pressure.

The goal isn't to eliminate anxiety before you can function — that's rarely realistic or necessary. It's to build a small set of tools that work in the moment: slower breathing, naming what you're feeling out loud or on paper, grounding yourself in something physical and present.

None of that makes anxiety disappear. It makes it something you can carry while still doing the thing in front of you.
