Belonging That Lets People Show Up as Themselves

Team building isn't the retreat. It's whether people feel safe the Monday after.

Team-building activities can be fun, and they rarely build lasting belonging on their own. Real belonging is built in ordinary moments — being remembered, being asked a genuine question, being allowed to disagree without consequence.

Teams with strong belonging tend to have leaders who consistently notice individuals, not just outcomes — who knows what's going on in someone's life, who checks in without an agenda, who makes space for people to be more than their output.

If belonging on your team depends entirely on the annual retreat, it's worth asking what's happening — or not happening — every other week of the year.
