What You're Feeling

Ashamed

Shame is different from guilt — guilt says "I did something bad," shame says "I am something bad." It targets identity, not behavior, which is why it feels so much harder to shake.

Common thoughts

  • What's wrong with me?
  • If people really knew, they'd think less of me.
  • I should hide this.

Body sensations

  • A hot flush, especially in the face
  • An urge to disappear or hide
  • A sinking feeling

What helps

  • Saying the shameful thing out loud to someone safe — shame shrinks with disclosure
  • Separating the behavior from your identity
  • Self-compassion instead of self-attack

What makes it worse

  • Keeping it a total secret
  • Harsh self-judgment disguised as "accountability"
